Mystery Readers
We have had some awesome mystery readers so far! Thank you so much to those that have taken time out of their day to come and read to our class. The kiddos love it!
DECEMBER 17TH: HOLIDAY PARTY
Awesome holiday parties would not be possible without awesome parents!!
DECEMBER 13TH: GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY!
On this day, I had to miss a day of school due to traveling to Philadelphia! Each year, my family attends the Army vs Navy football game. My brother is currently in his 3rd year at the United States Military Academy (West Point). Around Veteran's Day, the students learned all about the armed forces and wrote letters to veterans. The students know how important my brother and the army are to me....Receiving this text from the sub on the day I missed WAS THE BEST!! :)
December 5th: Raleigh Little Theatre
We had a great time at our first field trip of the year! At Raleigh Little Theatre we went on a tour and got to see multiple stages and where all of the costumes are made! After our tour we ate lunch and then got to participate in an acting workshop!
November 22nd: Fall party
Kiddos had a blast at our fall party. Thank you to all those who helped facilitate the party!
November 15th: Kindness Activity
This week during Positivity Project, we have been discussing kindness. In this activity, each student got a cut out heart. When I said something "unkind", the students would crumple up their paper to represent the comment hurting their feelings. Then, I would apologize to the students for my unkind words and they would attempt to straighten out their paper. We did this multiple times. Moral of the story was...When you say unkind words or do unkind things to others, you may apologize but it will NEVER take away the words that you already said.
October 31st: Trick or treat math
Since we had school on Halloween this year, why not make it fun?! Students worked with a partner to go around to each station to solve a math problem. After an adult checked their work, they could get a piece of candy. Who knew math could be this much fun!
October 28th: Steam
Our wonderful STEAM teacher, Mrs. Sollars, comes in every other week to do awesome, hands on activities with the students. In this lesson, the students had to plan, construct, and build a water tower. They were limited to the supplies that were given to them and had to work together!
October 16th: All about the sun
In science, we have been learning all about the sun. To wrap up our unit, we used our creativity to create a close up picture of the sun to go with our "All About the Sun" writing piece.
October 2nd: Day and Night
We have just started to dive into our Sun, Moon, and Stars unit in science. To see what students already know, we went outside with chalk! They were asked to draw what you may see in a daytime sky, and then what you may see in a nightime sky. Sometimes, you have to go outside and get a little messy during science!
September 24th: teamwork challenges
We love hanging out with Mr. Stover's class! Today, we had lots of teamwork challenges (aligning with Positivity Project) where we had to collaborate and communicate to complete a task. We had a blast!
September 17th: Pokemon Math
It was a beautiful day out, so why not do math and catch Pokemon at the same time???
September 13th: Book Buddies!
This year, our class and Mr. Stover's 4th grade class are book buddy classes! We will meet at least once a month where students have an assigned book buddy. During our time together, the students will read to each other and bond over books. From past experiences, the relationship a 1st grader and 4th grader can make is amazing! If we are on our best behavior.....we may even have class parties together!!
September 3rd: Picture Time!!
August 26th: First Day of School!
On the first day of school, we read the book Chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum is about a girl who wilts when a couple of students at school make fun of her name. We discussed how in our class we all have unique names that are special to us because our parents picked them out. We talked about how our names make us super special, and that we all have things that are special to us. Your students were asked to color in their special, unique name, and then to draw things around their names that are special to them!
Welcome to our 2019-2020 Blog!
On this tab, I will occasionally be posting picture updates of all the fun stuff we are doing in class! I will also have Seesaw as another platform to post picture on!
February 14th: valentines day!
Today was filled with lots of fun, crafts, and especially candy!
February 12th: 100th day of school!
We threw it back to 2002, and did the same activities Ms. Parrish did when she was in 1st grade!
February 5th: Reading Lesson Outside!
When it's February and 70 degrees outside, you have to take your students outside for their reading lesson!
January 25th: Baby Chicks!
Thank you Mrs. Landahl and Leah for bringing in this awesome show and tell! We got to interact and hold the baby chicks, hear a silly story about chickens, and even do an awesome writing activity.
January 22nd: Gravel, Pebble, and Sand
After learning all about gravel, pebble, and sand, we decided to integrate art with science! We used a variety of tools (cotton balls, qtips, and toothpicks) and paint to create an accurate representation of each rock category.
December 20th: Class Holiday party!
WOOT WOOT! Our class holiday party was a hit. Thanks to everyone who joined us and to those who planned it. Myself and the students enjoyed making gingerbread houses, creating ornaments, and a snowman treat!
December 19th: Class party with Mr. Stover
Since we are book buddies with Mr. Stover's 4th grade class, we decided to have a combined Holiday party! We visited his classroom to do various activities such as paint ornaments, make snowmen, and create holiday cards! From a teacher stand point, it is amazing to see the bond the students have created with their book buddies.
December 12th: In-House Field Trip
Our Rocks and Soil in house field trip was a blast! We got to learn about all different types of rocks by sifting through our own soil and mining for rocks. Once we found them, we matched them up on a chart to learn their name. Our special surprise was that we got to keep the rocks we found and our magnifying glasses!
November 19th: Turkey in Disguise
In reading, we read the story of "Turkey in Disguise" and practice identifying the story elements and retelling the story. Each student then received their own turkey. Their job was to disguise the turkey so that it did not get eaten for Thanksgiving!
November 8th: Field Trip to Raleigh Little Theatre
We enjoyed our trip to Raleigh Little Theatre! We got to tour and explore the theatre, seeing the stage and the "behind the scenes". We also got to be a part of an acting class where we played various roles and expressed our creativity!
October 31st: Trick or treat math
Since we had school on Halloween this year, 1st grade decided to do a math trick or treat! There were stations set up all around the playground area, with a math problem at each station. Students had to go around to each station, solve the math problem, get their answer checked by an adult, and then received a piece of candy!
OCTOBER 19TH: KINESTHETIC NUMBER LINE
Today, we introduced using a number line to add and subtract within 20. We took a trip outside and made a kinesthetic one! In groups of three, students rolled the dice, recorded the equation, and solved the equation by hoping on the number line!
October 18th: Book Buddies!
Today we started a monthly tradition. Each month, if both classes are on their best behavior, we conduct book buddies with Mr. Stover's 4th grade class! They have the opportunity to get to know one another, read their favorite books, and the bigger kids help my little ones read tricky books! First outing was super successful.
October 18th: Drummer Performance
Today, we got to take part in a drummer performance. This interactive assembly was one for the books! Students got to use trashcans and pipes to create a beat, which turned into a song when everyone performed. It took tons of listening skills and concentration, but we rocked it! One of our friends in our class, Ashlyn, even got to go up front!
September 18th: A great surprise!!
As we were leaving Dance today, we decided to check on the "bug box" that is in the front hallway. Inside, there were caterpillars that were collected from our Douglas Garden, that were already in the chrysalis stage of their life cycle. We had heard that one had turned into a beautiful butterfly, so we took some time to observe. All of a sudden, one started moving!! Our class was lucky enough to watch a butterfly hatch. Safe to say, the kiddos were SUPER excited!
August 27th: First day of first grade!!
Scroll through the pictures and find your student :)
Welcome to my 2018-2019 Blog!!
On this tab, I will post updates and pictures of the fun things your student is doing in the classroom.
March 14th: Kindness Activity
Today, we learned about being kind. I gave each student a red paper heart and told them to pretend as if it was their real heart. I said “pretend” hurtful things to them, and every time I said unkind words, they crushed their hearts. I then apologized for my hurtful words, so they tried to straighten their hearts back out. In the end, they all had crumbled, torn, damaged hearts. This was to show them that no matter how much you apologize, you can never take away the unkind words that you say. “In a world where you can be anything, BE KIND”
March 7th: Peter and The wolf puppet show
In music, students have focused on the story of Peter and the Wolf (musical edition). They have practiced recognizing different instruments by sound and have matched those instruments with different characters in the story. In class, we made a lovely backdrop and puppets so that we could put on a puppet show. Today, we performed alongside Mrs. Komyati's class!
FEBRUARY 9TH: 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL!!!
All I can say is.....WE MADE IT!! 80 more days to go!
January 7th: New additions to the classroom
We have two new additions to our classroom. Meet Simon and Sadie! The students are super excited that they have found their permanent home in our classroom. Simon is going to stay in the classroom for the rest of the school year, but Sadie gets to go home with a lucky student each weekend! If your student is lucky enough to take Sadie home, they will have to fill out a "weekend report" on what they did with Sadie and share with the class! Pictures are always welcome. Pretty please make sure that Sadie always comes back in a timely manner! She would be dearly missed :)
January 27th: Golden Dustpan finds a home
At our Positivity Assembly today, our class was awarded the Golden Dustpan Award!! This means that our classroom was the cleanest of all of 1st grade for 2nd quarter. I am so proud and honored!!
I AM SO SO SO SO SORRY FOR NOT UPDATING THIS MORE! OUR SCHOOL YEAR HAS BEEN SUPER BUSY WITH AWESOME LEARNING!!
November 1st: Music/Math Collaboration
Since today was a G day, I planned a music and math collaboration with Ms. Zelasky, the music teacher. In math, we are learning about place value and how two digit numbers can be represented with tens and ones. We used our knowledge of place value to represent numbers with music, using drum sticks and tambourines. The students hit two drum sticks together to show how many tens are in a number and hit the tambourine to show how many ones are in the number!
October 27th: Math Trick or Treat!
Today was a fun day! The students were able to go trick or treating, but had to solve math problems along the way! The students traveled in pairs around the playground area, solved a math problem, had their answer checked by a teacher, and then received a piece of candy!
October 27th: Creative Pumpkins
Today we decided to use our creativity, which is the character strength we are learning about this week, to get into the holiday spirit and make pumpkins! The students had access to various art materials and were challenged to use their creativity to make a pumpkin. After completing, they had to ANSWER questions about their creation (which is what we are learning to do in reading, answer questions). After they answered questions, they had to ASK two questions about another friends pumpkin (which is another skill we are learning to do, answer questions about a text). They had a blast!!
October 4th: Rolling Spheres
Today, we continued to explore our force and motion science unit by working with spheres and runways. We discussed how cups roll down a ramp, and then discussed what we thought would happen when spheres roll down a runway. The students were challenged to "make a runway that would keep the marble going". Then, the students were challenged to collaborate and create a ramp with the whole class! See the awesome collaboration skills and runways your students came up with!
September 29th: P.E. and Math Collaboration
Today, Mrs. H and I planned a collaboration that combined what we are learning in math with P.E. skills! In math, we are learning to solve problems with missing partners, such as 7 + __ = 16. We have also worked on solving word problems, as well as using our subtilizing skills, which means quickly being able to correctly identify how many objects there are without counting. In this collaboration, students went to each station, solved the math problem, and did the P.E. skill at each station the number of times the answer was. The students hula hooped, used scoopers, threw a beach ball, bounced a ball, jumped rope, and had so much fun doing so!!
September 28th: Balance and Stability
Today, we continued to explore and learn about our new science unit, force and motion. The students have previously learned the vocabulary terms balance, stable/unstable, and balance point. In today's lesson, I challenged them to build something with the materials in front of them that could "balance". While building, I asked the students questions such as "Where is the balance point?" and "What is making it stable/unstable?". After building, the students drew a picture of their creation and labeled the balance point in their science notebooks. Check out the creativity!
September 15th: Math Pokemon Go!
Today, we played Math Pokemon Go! The whole first grade went outside today and gathered to play the game. The goal was to walk around the outside of the school to find and solve math problems. Once the math problem was solved (students had their own answer sheets to solve the problems), our class was able to capture a Pokemon! I am happy to say that our class was able to solve all of the math problems, therefor we caught all the Pokemon!!! :)
September 7th: MAth Scavenger Hunt & sight word chalk!
Today in math, we went on a math scavenger hunt in the hallway! The students walked around and searched for task cards that were taped on the walls. They had to look at the ten frames, count the set, and then record their answers on their individual answer sheets! Their goal was to find and solve all 20 task cards in the hallway!
Also, today was outdoor classroom day! In the afternoon, we took a big box of chalk outside and found a shaded area. Each student received a piece of chalk and we practiced writing our sight words, which are words that you cannot sound out! Sight words are extremely important to know when working towards becoming a proficient reader, so why not practice them outside on a beautiful September day?!
September 1st: Shaving cream Numbers!
Today in math, we decided to have fun Friday! Each student was given shaving cream to spread out at their desk and then had to put their listening ears on. I called out a number, and then the students had to write that number in the shaving cream. We were really working hard on writing our numbers the correct way, and having fun at the same time!!
August 31st: Our CLass Promise
In social studies, we have been learning and discussing school and classroom rules. As a class, we came up with a list of classroom rules that we thought were important to follow in our classroom. From the list of rules, we then created a class promise. By signing the promise today, your student is promising to abide by the rules that we decided as a class each and every day!
August 28th: First day of school Fun!
Scroll through the pictures and find your student :)
